Feed in Web Radio into DVB-C Networks using the UIM

Web radio expands the traditional radio offering with a virtually unlimited selection of stations, ranging from major national and international broadcasters to regional and local stations that are often not available via conventional reception methods (DVB-C/T, FM). In addition, there are thematic channels, special formats, and niche-oriented streams. For operators of local DVB-C networks, web radio offers a simple way to enhance their programme lineup, for example with regional content, multilingual services, or special-interest programmes for specific target groups.
This application note describes the steps required to inject web radio streams into a local coaxial network using the AXING UIM 4-01H, from creating a custom M3U playlist to importing it into the UIM.

Create a New M3U Playlist

  • Open the AXING UIM operating manual, section 3.3.1 “Creating and Editing an M3U Playlist”.
  • Copy the sample text provided there (template for an M3U playlist).

  • Create a new text document. (Right-click > New > Text Document)
  • Open the file by right-clicking and selecting “Edit in Editor”.
  • Paste the previously copied sample text.
  • Select File > Save As.
  • Important: Set the file type to “All Files” (not “Text Documents (*.txt)”).
  • Add the extension “.m3u” to the file name and click Save.

Insert Stream URL and Static Image

  • Open the website of the desired station (example: swr3.de) and search for M3U playlists for web radio reception.
  • Download an M3U playlist or copy the URLs from the website.
  • Replace the placeholder URL in your playlist with the copied URL.
  • Find a suitable image that should be displayed during playback and copy the image URL.
  • Note: Adding images (e.g. station logos) increases the overall data rate of the DVB-C channel while also displaying images on TV sets. If all 4 audio streams are modulated without image data, the resulting data rate may be too low for some receiving devices. As a result, the programmes may not be detected during channel scanning.
  • Insert the copied image URL between the quotation marks of the tvg-logo attribute.
  • Replace the placeholder name “Channel 1” at the end of the information line with the desired station name.

Repeat these steps to add additional radio streams.

  • Save the file.
  • Import the playlist into the UIM.
  • Open the AXING UIM web interface and log in.
  • Go to: Maintenance > Config > M3U and upload the playlist.
  • Select the streams in Initialization Phase 1.
